We all know that Trapped Under Ice put out one of the best records of 2009, but now we can say that they also put out what will likely be the best core video of 2010. Holy shit, bro. Poverty, hopelessness and stagedives all have a home in this shit. Respect to director Sean Cullen who apparently made this his senior project in college. Long live hardcore.

This dude has been really feeling a lot of Texan core bands lately like Iron Age, Bitter End, etc. Another lone star state band that deserves to get more shine is Power Trip. The dudes in This Is Hell turned me onto these bros and they rip it on some Crumbsuckers meets Trapped Under Ice shit. You remember the part in John Joseph’s book where he writes about his cocaine induced car chase with the cops in a stolen car? Power Trip would have been the perfect soundtrack to JJ blasting past the pigs over the Williamsburg bridge. Slam!

This band from all over EU channels the authentic side of 90s metal core.

I just found this Euro band via Trapped Under Ice’s Twitter. Yeah, I said it. Anyway, as we all know, must Euro core bands eat turds or are at the very least hella cheesy, but pissed. In any case, Pain Runs Deep is pretty sick. It’s not exactly unique or profoundly heavy, but there’s a quality of core authenticity in it that can’t be ignored. This sounds like 90’s metal-core the way I remember it: sloppy, energetic and filled with hate. I recommend peeping “Locate Your Enemy.”

Superbowl picks from the creme of the core crop and a bunch of CY's tight bros.

Sports is an institution here at Chronic Youth and with the big dog of all American sporting events looming we asked our friends and some of our favorite bands what their take is on the big game.

Steve Dolcemaschio (Tee Pee Records): The Saints because their entire team isn’t white.

Justice (Trapped Under Ice) Personally I would like to see New Orleans come out on top of the superbowl. I think it would be a great thing for their city. Plus, as a Ravens fan I would love to see the Colts lose!

Brendan (Incendiary) – Although I’d like to see the Saints win, I think dorky ass Manning is just too good. Indy will take it but it’ll be close…

Nick (The Destro) - Something inside of me almost wants to cheer for Payton Manning and his Colts, turning around one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL. . That being said, I am a boy from the south, with the people of Louisiana as my neighbors to our great state of Tejas. As we watched Drew Brees rebuild and push the Naw-lins Saints, the people from the city also continue to fight and rebuild after Katrina, so I seem to feel a sense of pride, a feeling only second to our own Dallas Cowboys, that has brought a helluva smile to my face with many beers raised this season. It appears the Saints are done losing and are walking in expecting to win this one. They have the #1 offense for a reason and their defense has been killing it. I’m ready to see Darrin Sharper pick more than a few off Manning. So, just as the great New Orleans native Phillip H. Anselmo gives tribute to the team and city in his band Down, I will also be cheering ”On March the Saints!”

Jayscender (Descender) – Saints, Because even God wants the Saints to win! and I actually hail from the great city of New Orleans! GEAUX SAINTS!

Mike Bigel - (Green Arm Management) – The Saints. I don’t actually care who wins though, as I’m a Giants fan. But shit, the Saints deserve it… And Shockey deserves to win a Superbowl where he’s allowed in the stadium!

Jamie Farkas (Vice Records) – The Saints. Because New Orleans deserves a victory. And I can’t root for the team that took the Jets out of the running.

Joe Affe (Maximum Penalty) – Even though Manning & the Colts knocked out the NY Jets and are the favored win, I would loved to see New Orleans take it all for the first time in the history of the game. You don’t have to be a Saints fan to go with the underdog on this one – the bookies are going to have a field day!

Hull - Those in HULL that watch or are interested in football believe that the Colts of Indianapolis will win this year’s Superbowl spectacular. There would be quite a few reasons for this, but, the only good one would be because they had the balls to pull out a last minute win over NY’s last hope for a dream season. Otherwise, their loss to the Jets would have spurred many a jolt and jeer to our good friend in Batillus. Mr. Geoff Summers was/is quite excited about that damn team winning and busting his balls is rather enjoyable.

Freddy (Madball): Colts…all the way. No particular reason, I’m a Giants fan… but I like the Colts as a team more than the Saints.

John Bundy (NAAM): What the fuck is the super bowl?

Looks like a lot of love for the Saints and the WHO DAT!? nation. Check out all the bands and bros that weighed in and party your ass off on Sunday!

For those who have been hiding under the proverbial HC rock, Maximum Penalty is the epitome of New York Hardcore. The band has been around the block, making heads roll for the past two decades. The band’s newest offering Life & Times (Reaper Records), showcases the dudes at their most uncompromising, crafting tracks the way that they want, despite foolish metal and hardcore trends. Based on Max Pen’s deep NYHC roots, Chronic Youth caught up with guitarist Joe Affe to get a feel for some of the most important years for both him, the band and the history of New York Hardcore. Don’t miss the band as they kill it at our forthcoming ChronicYouth.com + Deathwish CMJ Showcase!

1986
Right around 86’ is where I discovered a lot of hardcore music (i.e.; Brains, Mags, AF, & Warzone). I had a small crew of friends in high school that were listening to HC records and going to shows. I was going to LaGuardia H.S. on the upper west side at the time (which is where I first met Jimmy Williams – who attended Humanities H.S. downtown). Without being in Manhattan all the time I don’t think I would have gotten into as much music as I did. The city was where everything was happening and from there it spread out into the boroughs. That’s where I really started tape trading with friends, cutting out to pick up other demo tapes, 7 inches and just to hang out downtown. The Ritz, 1018, Lismar, Nightingales & CB’s – my whole world changed and it wasn’t just me.

1988
88’ saw the recording of the MP demo out in Brooklyn at Sty in the Sky and our first appearance on WNYU “Crucial Chaos” which, at the time, was the local hardcore-punk college radio station in the city w/ Johnny Stiff & Spermie Marlene. Later that year, we put out our Demo (like every good HC band at the time does) and also put 2 songs on Bill Wilson’s Blackout Records compilation Where the Wild Things Are. At the time it wasn’t about the size of the sound but the energy from the songs – you can definitely hear it on those recordings. It was Roger Miret that gave us our first CBGB matinee show with AF that year.

1994
94’ is a significant year for MP – it saw the reformation of the band at a point in time that I personally didn’t think would ever happen. Jimmy had some legal issues and we hadn’t had any contact for a few years. So much had gone down with everyone personally I never thought when Jimmy resurfaced he would ignite so much inspiration and drive. My brother had come back from a place many don’t come back from and to share that was nothing short of a miracle. The rest of us pretty much dropped what we were doing at the time and picked MP back up where we left off. Recording an EP and 2 full lengths along with touring the States & Europe was something at the time nobody would have predicted.

2007
We’re asked to be part of a Hardcore station in the new Grand Theft Auto IV video game along with the likes of (Bad Brains, Cro-mags, AF, SOIA, Leeway, Murphy’s law, Underdog) to name a few. That came off the heels of our longtime friend Armondo Bordas who met me and Jimmy outside of Humanities H.S. in the city years ago – fuckin’ small world! That right there immortalized MP in a way we never thought possible. To be a part of that is one thing but to be on it with those bands meant a lot to us. Especially for us growing up in the New York scene.

2009
09’ brings Maximum Penalty in contact with Dan Korneff (Producer) whom we met through our one time manager Billy Milano & Patrick Kitzel (Reaper Records) who we first met in Europe on tour w/ AF. There had been a conscious decision in & around 06’ to focus on the original sound of MP, all of us including myself, Darren (drums) & Jimmy worked really hard on getting MP back to its core, so when Korneff & Kitzel came into the picture and helped make us make that a reality was amazing!

2010
Maximum Penalty is planning a Japanese & Australian release date for our new record Life & Times. MP will also be touring the East Coast with fellow labelmates Trapped Under Ice, Naysayer & Forfeit in early January also with Terror in the Spring. We’re in the stages of planning a trip into Canada and out to do some west coast dates before next summer. Along with a European tour by summers end.

Nashville's finest '90s core enthusiasts bring it back hella proper.

I stumbled upon Dead City a few weeks back scrolling through Revelation Records‘ distribution site. And let me tell you, this is quality hardcore in the spirit of the ’90s, but with all of the metallic trimmings to keep it more than relevant. The album is filled with Bloodlet-esque vocals (a resurrected trend, we hope), minimal chugs and lots of angst. Imagine Trapped Under Ice if the band was influenced by Discharge or Pentagram, but with mosh in mind. Nashville is officially on the map.
