Anything that Man Is the Bastard/Bastard Noise has ever put out has been amazing. Arty doom shit usually sucks a fat one, but dudes are one of the few bands that are constantly making shit interesting. I’m hella bummed I missed their dates here in NYC, but whatevs. Is it just me or there a subtle Voivod vibe to this track?

VOID OF REVERIES: BM GOES LATE 90S SCREAMO, SORTA?

This is something I’ve thought a lot before, but never when it was time to post: a ton of the depressive black metal stuff coming out sounds like it could qualify for screamo shit from the late 90s. No shit. Case and point: Void of Reveries.

This shit seems like an arty screamo nerd who digs ambient stuff having a go at making some depressive BM. The transitions between different influences are pretty obvious when you’re listening, but it’s definitely a noteworthy addition to the moodier, shoegaze-ier stuff inthe genre right now. Blast beats, single note riffs, crying/screaming vocals. This is some sensitive shit. Now, I know Fred is going to hate this post, because he hates all screamo. Oh well.

I’m not saying these bands sound the same, but I definitely hear a connection there. From the music to the “please don’t look in my journal” song titles, similar mopey minor-key melodies … I think it’s there. Anyway, get bummed out and check this stuff.

PESTE NOIRE: FRANCE’S FINEST RELEASE A BANGER, MORONS DON’T DIG

French black metallers Peste Noire get their fair share of hate, which is funny. Apparently fans of black metal are upset that main-dude Famine goes back and forth with his commitments to bullshit like NS. Who knows where he stands, and who cares? Mel Gibson punched his girlfriend, but I’ll still watch Lethal Weapon reruns. Doesn’t mean I like him one way or another. Besides, this whole art-versus-artist thing is boring to me.

Peste Noire releases some of the weirder, more challenging metal out there. That’s a fact. Soemtimes it makes people love them, other times it makes people hate them. Lots of folk influences, lots of virtuoso shredding, and just an interesting and fucked up way of putting music together. Personally, I think they’re one of the only talented and creative bands out there who really push what can fall under the black metal banner.

Sure, you probably already know them. We just haven’t posted this, and it’s about goddamn time. This shit slays, even though it’s off an album that’s almost universally hated. The second video is off a previous album, but shreds just as hard. Get in there.

HATEBREED: SET IT OFF

I’ve been on the fence with regard to new Hatebreed shit. It’s not awful, but it’s so fucking lackluster. Maybe it’s the ’singing’ or maybe it’s the not-as-pissed lyrics, but shit isn’t working out. But the band’s cover of Madball’s ‘Set It Off’ is the best shit they’ve done in years. It’s a bold move, but they own it. So I’m still hopeful the band is not completely burnt. Only time will tell.
