This Canadian band was one of the few that could get political freaks and militant edge dudes unified.

Ok, so I can’t say I’m actually a fan of much Canadian hardcore, but Chokehold and all of the members’ off-shoots were sick. Namely, Left For Dead, Cursed, 78 Days and the like. But none were as triumphant as Chokehold. I mean, what other band could get Bloodlink political punk freaks and militant edge dudes in the same room, moshing as one? Content With Dying remains on of the most pissed-off chugging core records to date and makes the Acacia Strain sound like it should be somewhere with a dick in its face as opposed to onstage getting wiggers all amped up. Fuck America and fuck you.

CY's 3 core contributors offer up a few bands that we think are sick despite being broken up, obscure or not-so-reputable.

Chronic Youth has decided to write about band’s that we think are fucking sick on a weekly basis. Big surprise? Below contains 3 picks from CY editors David Castillo (Light Asylum), Fred Miketa (Braid), and Cameron Octigan (Svarti Loghin).

SVARTI LOGHIN:
Sweden’s Svarti Loghin used to be a shoegaze influenced black metal band, like in the clip below. Well, after receiving a promo of their new record, Drifting Through The Void, it’s safe to say they’ve eradicated pretty much the whole metal vibe. In fact, lots of this shit sounds like a really bummed out Ride or, seriously, The Van Pelt. What the fuck? The track below isn’t much of an indication of that, but it’s still a solid piece off their old record Empty World. Being from Sweden, and being a depressive black metal band, you’ve probably already asked yourself “what, do they have the dude from Hypothermia in there, too?” Yeah, actually, they do. He’s listed as a session/live member, which is pretty much being in the band. So, I guess he doesn’t write for them? Maybe all the better for it. This is solid as is, and his last few 30 minute lo-fi emo releases have been mediocre at best. This, however, is the shit. get into it.

BRAID:
While my heart told me to focus on a Hey Mercedes post because I think that that incarnation of the band is better, I guess I’ll pick Braid because the band recently announced that it will be getting its debut reissued on Polyvinyl. Shit yeah. Braid on vinyl in 2010. That’s what’s up. Maybe the label will shape up, tell Of Montreal to suck a dick, and get back to business.

LIGHT ASYLUM:
NYC is going through a dark electronic music renaissance of sorts and while a lot of twerps are happy to rip Joy Division, Daf or Fad Gadget straight up, there are some bands pushing the boundaries a little more. One band that’s got me hooked is Light Asylum, this duo conjures some pretty trippy dark soundscapes and pairs them with hauntingly soulful vocals that really make them stand out from the pack. This is the kind of shit that you can listen to at home but in the right setting you can also party to. If you’re in Austin for SXSW come check them out at the Mishka/Chronic Youth Ov Curse banger!

Yo peep it - High On Fire’s new video. Crazy.
Chicago's kings of noise-rock lace CY with an exclusive stream from their forthcoming Brutal Panda 7" EP.

We’re stoked to offer up a stream of the sickness that is Millions‘ Side A of their forthcoming Panic Program EP. Set for release on March 16 via Brutal Panda, this shit is class a legit noise-rock. Like a heavier Young Widows or maybe even Unsane if they were obsessed with Fender Telecasters, Millions’ take on heavy rock is a force to be reckoned with. I kinda think that this band could have even shared the stage with acts like Giants Chair or some shit - if they were around in the early 90s and down with the more driving, mathy emo bands. Whatever. Shit is sick.

Also, be sure to catch the band at the forthcoming Chronic Youth/Brutal Panda Rager on June 11 at Glasslands in Brooklyn alongside Javelina, Fight Amp and more TBD.

Millions’ Panic Program is out March 16 via Brutal Panda.

Eastern Europe still beating the shit out of USBM. Hail Drudkh.

Drudkh is a fucking sick beast. Some of their newer material really lacks the drive and sense of urgency behind records like Forgotten Legends. I was listening to the new shit today, and it just didn’t hit like I remembered these guys doing before. So, a little bummed, I went back to their first record, and HO-LY-SHIT. So fucking awesome, man. The Eastern Europeans sure know how to take black metal and make it equally depressing, pissed, and driving. I’d say there are some depressive elements on this track, but it still manages to shred the fuck out of your speakers. Between Gromm and these guys, Ukraine is doing something seriously right.

Check their last record, Microcosmos, which was on Season of Mist.

After over two decades, they're still better than your favorite band.

The other day I left the dentist’s office with plenty of lidocaine and vicodin in my system, when I decided to stop in a record store. My down payment on the surgery I had was $200 less than I was expecting, so fuck it. Saw a copy of Darkthrone’s second album (A Blaze in the Northern Sky), of which I lost my copy years and years ago. So, I bought a new one. Yup, it’s still fucking sick, and still my favorite, period. You know, right before they went fully black metal. Anyway, it made me stop and remember the new Darkthrone album is out.

If you can’t handle their newer releases, you’re not going to dig it. But if you happen to actually like metal and not just second wave Norwegian black metal (Mayhem, Burzum, etc), it’s your lucky day, brah. Less Motorhead than F.O.A.D., and less schlocky than Dark Thrones and Black Flags, Circle the Wagons is sick from start to finish. Picture some Saxon, some 70s rock, a lil’ NWOBHM and some rolled into a tight ball of pissed-off Darkthrone bizarreness. That’s pretty much it. Let’s see ‘em.

I was kind of nervous to see how these guys would follow up Seizures in Barren Praise, but man, they really came out swinging for the fucking fences. The guitar sound is so broken yet powerful and Ryan Mckenney’s voice is loaded with urgency and venom.

New York’s Ash Pool may not be a household mix, but teh bands weird-as-shit raw black metal actually stands out from the pack. It’s less annoyingly serious than most BM bands and the riffs are subtly melodic and way pissed. They kind of sound like a bunch of dudes that are into thrash and 90s HC at times. maybe I’m tripping, but the band definitely has something weirdly unique that I can’t quite pinpoint. Either you get it or you don’t. I do.

Ash Pool’s For Which He Plies The Lash is out now via Hospital Productions.
