TREE VIAL RADIO: INSTALLMENT 1

We here at the CY squadron are pleased to welcome author and general rad dude Tony Rettman to the family. He’ll be kicking out a weekly podcast/mix for that ass under  the name Tree Vial Radio. Make yourself useful and download this shit ASAP. And look out for Rettman’s new Why Be Something You’re Not: Detroit Hardcore ‘79-’85 on Revelation. Oh, and look out for the release party we’ll be hosting at Santos for the book. It’s gonna be a rager. I’ll let Tony take it from here.

The first edition of TVR for Chronic Youth will be like all the other editions that will follow it; just abuncha tunes strung together that I happen to like. There is no tiny pee-pee collector one-upping going on ‘round here. Just the tracks and nothing but the tracks. If it happens to be pressed in editions of 500 or five million, who fucking cares? It’s the tunes and the way they zap ya that matters…

And now a brief rundown of this installment. Download after the jump.

GREYMACHINE – ‘Vultures Descend’ – Why this record wasn’t talked up to the hilt last year, I really don’t fucking know. Godflesh + Head of David + Isis guys = HEY LIMP DICK WHO JUST HEARD THE BRAINBOMBS ON AN MP3! DON’T BOTHER PRESSING UP YOUR CREEPY GIRL HATING LIMITED TO 100 7″! In the words of Townes Van Zandt, ‘You Are Not Needed Now’.

JON ANDERSON -  ‘Ooquaq en Transic/Naon/Transic To’ – Squishy weirdo New Age concept record from Yes frontman. Oh shut up, if I told you it was Animal Collective, you’d think it was friggin’ genius.

SEEFEEL – ‘Moodswing’ –  An interlude that floats…wudda concept!

DRAGON – ‘Going Slow’ – New Zealand Prog titans circa ‘73. Thank whomever ya want that the Aztec label re-issued this last year for those of us who don’t wanna shell out a retardo amount of money for an OG copy of it. Now if they’d only re-issue their second album, ‘Scented Gardens For The Blind’, I might be able to get on with my life…

GALAXIE 500 - ‘Submission’ – Those re-issues of all the Galaxie 500 records that came out recently on 20/20/20 were a real godsend. The OG copies are down there in the basement where I don’t go and these re-issues were right there in the mailbox with bonus tracks and all; what convenience! Listening to them again laid out this weird musical blueprint in my head of where my listening habits went after hearing these records the first time around in the 90’s. Big Star, Quicksilver Messenger Service, English folkies, etc. G500 were one of the reasons I went where I went. That and a shitload of pot…

ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN - ‘My Kingdom’ – I really don’t think I need to explain this one. The greatest record the English ever coughed up next to ‘Close To The Edge’…and ‘Kings of Oblivion’…and then there’s ‘Greatest Hits Volume Two’…and then there’s…ah shit…I better get outta here.

‘Til next time – TR
