WEEKLY PICKS: BRAID, SVARTI LOGHIN, LIGHT ASYLUM

Chronic Youth has decided to write about band’s that we think are fucking sick on a weekly basis. Big surprise? Below contains 3 picks from CY editors David Castillo (Light Asylum), Fred Miketa (Braid), and Cameron Octigan (Svarti Loghin).

SVARTI LOGHIN:
Sweden’s Svarti Loghin used to be a shoegaze influenced black metal band, like in the clip below. Well, after receiving a promo of their new record, Drifting Through The Void, it’s safe to say they’ve eradicated pretty much the whole metal vibe. In fact, lots of this shit sounds like a really bummed out Ride or, seriously, The Van Pelt. What the fuck? The track below isn’t much of an indication of that, but it’s still a solid piece off their old record Empty World. Being from Sweden, and being a depressive black metal band, you’ve probably already asked yourself “what, do they have the dude from Hypothermia in there, too?” Yeah, actually, they do. He’s listed as a session/live member, which is pretty much being in the band. So, I guess he doesn’t write for them? Maybe all the better for it. This is solid as is, and his last few 30 minute lo-fi emo releases have been mediocre at best. This, however, is the shit. get into it.

BRAID:
While my heart told me to focus on a Hey Mercedes post because I think that that incarnation of the band is better, I guess I’ll pick Braid because the band recently announced that it will be getting its debut reissued on Polyvinyl. Shit yeah. Braid on vinyl in 2010. That’s what’s up. Maybe the label will shape up, tell Of Montreal to suck a dick, and get back to business.

LIGHT ASYLUM:
NYC is going through a dark electronic music renaissance of sorts and while a lot of twerps are happy to rip Joy Division, Daf or Fad Gadget straight up, there are some bands pushing the boundaries a little more. One band that’s got me hooked is Light Asylum, this duo conjures some pretty trippy dark soundscapes and pairs them with hauntingly soulful vocals that really make them stand out from the pack. This is the kind of shit that you can listen to at home but in the right setting you can also party to. If you’re in Austin for SXSW come check them out at the Mishka/Chronic Youth Ov Curse banger!
