The early-to-mid 90’s seemed to have a distinct formula when it came to rock videos. There was a visual presence of the band that developed their personalities both individually and as a unit within a 3-4 minute time frame. This development was also accompanied by a loose storyline, or at least some weirdo ‘artistic’ vision. Maybe it was art, maybe it was bullshit. That was the beauty behind it. Nirvana’s sarcasm was smeared all over their big-budget videos – a cleverly executed ‘fuck you’ to the assholes that poured countless dollars into them. The end result was an irreverent, shocking, and morbidly humorous cinematic presentation that made parents cringe and armies of flannel-clad teenagers rejoice. Whatever their intention, Nirvana’s ‘Heart Shaped Box’ remains a timeless masterpiece both musically and visually.
