There has been a weird wave of backlash against Xasthur and USBM as of late and I’m not entirely sure why. Maybe it’s his announced collaboration with Marissa Nadler? Maybe not. I mean, Fenriz can openly say he likes tech-house and shit but kids still jock Darkthrone. Anyway, Xasthur is sick. Personally, I’d much rather to retrospective, misanthropic and truly depressive music than a bunch of wieners barking about Satan and winter and Europe and shit. But that’s just me. Recorded prior to the phenomenally entrancing Subliminal Genocide LP, Xasthur’s 2005 Demo is more of the plodding, mid-tempo soul stealing scourge of the earth that has made me a fan of this USBM icon. Remixed and remastered by Hydra Head, this two song 12″ is critical for any black metal warrior who doesn’t get caught up in pathetic politics and truly values music that comes from a sincerely pissed off place.
Xasthur’s 2005 Demo is out February 23 via Hydra Head.
