WEEKLY PICKS: TODAY IS THE DAY + NEGLECT + BOLT THROWER

Chronic Youth has decided to write about band’s that we think are fucking sick on a weekly basis. Big surprise? Below contains 3 picks from CY editors David Castillo (Neglect), Fred Miketa (Today is the Day), and Cameron Octigan (Bolt Thrower).

TODAY IS THE DAY
It’s not that easy to select the ideal track or video from this consistently amazing band. I chose what I think is one of the band’s most overlooked albums (and the last for Relapse) Kiss the Pig. “Why They Hate Us” is the opening track from the album and features a bunch of automatic weapon sounds. There’s no doubt in my mind that Steve Austin recorded that shit live. Also, the record sleeve is filled with images of the band as vigilantes posing with guns in backwoods Tennessee. I could go on for hours, but TITD is one of the most misunderstood, deep, provocative and slightly offensive bands in metal history. Period.

NEGLECT
The dudes at Black and Blue Takeover just did two shows highlighting the best of Long Island hardcore and it was fucking sick. They had some great guests and for the banter alone it’s worth a listen. They played a ton of righteous jams but when Neglect’s classic anthem “Fuck Life” came on I really lost my shit. Their brand of nihilistic hate core took me back but can still get me singing along on a gray crappy day in NYC.

BOLT THROWER
Some might call England “a shithole” for giving us bands like The Beatles and The Bee Gees (and having food that tastes like poached ballsacks), but they also gave us Bolt Thrower. For that, we’re entirely grateful. This is pure, unapologetic death metal, and one of my favorites when I was a kid. Although, this stands up today. They pretty much sing about war and headbang a lot, which is all you really need anyway.
