Tampa’s Obituary have stood the test of time. They released some of the most influential and best selling death metal records of all time, and along with Morbid Angel, Deicide, and Scott Burns of Morrisound Studios they essentially defined American death metal. What’s left? Bar-B-Q sauce. More on that after I emote about my personal connection to this band.
I grew outside of Tampa and death metal was my first love. Before punk, before hardcore, all that shit. Obituary was one of my favorite bands in middle and high school. In fact, one time I was walking around the mall in Brandon, Florida and I spotted vocalist John Tardy in head-to-toe Umbro (yes, the soccer gear company) with a baseball hat on backwards. Immediately, i ransacked the girl at whatever kiosk I was next to and got him to autograph one of the stores business cards. That must have been 12 – 13 years ago, and I still have that thing in my photo album. For a second, I considered playing soccer, but realized it would interfere with after-school pot smoking and jerking off before my mom got home.
Also, knew a kid whose mom dated an ex-member, and the story ends with certain people smoking meth/speed out of a lightbulb. Then we all jammed some tracks. Pretty sure that dude was at least ten years older than me, and I was about 15.
As a Southern dude, Bar-B-Q has a special place in my heart, so you can only imagine how fucking stoked I was when Obituary and that delicious sauce/process were in the same sentence in my inbox. Anyway, now guitarist Trevor Peres is making his mark in the culinary world. Yes, Bar-B-Q sauce. It’s called T-Bone’s Famous ‘Original Rib’Licious, but why not Peres’ or something? Here’s why: “My nickname came from the band Agnostic Front on our tour together back in 1992. Ever since then everyone has called me T-Bone.” Like, no fucking big deal, I’ve been in Obituary forever, toured with Agnostic Front, and now I have a sauce company. He’s a goddamn renaissance man. Fuck. Also, you can expect to see Spicy Rib Rub, Sweet Chicken Rub and Spicy Hot Bar-B-Que in the near future.
